I like playing a variety of video games, but I guess now that I have played over a thousand button-mashing platform styled action games I have become super bored with them. If you didn’t grow up on video games and have never played the numerous button-mashing action games from the Nintendo / Super NES / Sega time period you’ll probably enjoy Darksiders for the Xbox 360 a lot. I have had my fill unfortunately with these games, to sum up, Darksiders in a sentence or two, I would say that the graphics are fun, the story is mildly entertaining, and the upgrade system is well done, but the sound is a bit of a miss, the choppy frame rate during certain parts is annoying and the obsessive amount of times you’ll need to press the A button becomes downright boring.
You’ll have to amp the difficulty level up on this game as well unless you like a really, really easy challenge. In Darksiders, you play the hero War who is one of the four horsemen of the Apocalypse. You are framed in a conspiracy that puts you at the center of destroying the living world and throwing heaven and hell out of balance. While this premise is kinda neat if slightly unoriginal, the lack of character depth in War and the lack to really explore and converse with the inhabitants of this hellish underworld limit the game’s ability to pull you in completely.
After playing for a few hours it was obvious that this title was meant to cash in on the coat-tails of God Of War, which is a much better game, and there seem to be elements of Dungeon Siege in it as well. The game isn’t terribly long or short, and for such a repetitive button masher that is a good thing, it took me around 16 hours to complete.
On the good side, the killing animations and special kills are fun as you gain powers and upgrades to your weapons and abilities. The graphics are good and the cut scenes are well done and the controls are laid out nicely and perform very well.
On the bad side, the bosses are way too easy to beat in this style of gameplay, especially towards the end of the game, the cheesy lack of depth in the War character and the repetitive button mashing.
I have to give this game a 3.1/5 and would say it’s a safe rental and only a good buy if the genre really appeals to you or if you are new to this style of gameplay.
