The basal metabolic rate or BMR is the amount of energy the body requires to maintain itself. Muscle mass is responsible for the BMR; anything that reduces the body’s lean muscle mass will reduce the BMR. This is why it is important to maintain muscle mass when trying to achieve weight loss. The expenditure of energy from the muscles is comprised of only 20 percent of the total energy expended during rest.

During strenuous exercise, the rate of energy expended from the muscles may increase by fifty percent or more. Because the energy used during exercise is the only form of energy that you can have control over, it is best to take advantage and exercise as much as possible. The foods we eat play a huge role in our metabolic rate and many dieters fail at achieving weight loss by eating less. In fact, eating raises the metabolism.
